Leadership Development Program And Its Importance
Leadership
development programs are designed for mid-level to senior-level
managers, most of whom have little knowledge about the principles of leadership and the implications of having a good/bad leader in the
overall success of the organization. It’s true that some of you are
born leaders. But it’s also true that most of you can strive to be
good leaders - if you are willing to put in sufficient effort to work
on your own motivations. In this regard, a leadership
development program is effective. The knowledge gained
from such programs/ workshops helps a manager in assessing himself as
a leader. This motivates him to develop skills that are essential
for leadership. Skills such as team building, listening and
communication skills, problem-solving and presentation are the
cornerstones of leadership.
The
expectations from a manager are a little different from an
ordinary employee. A leader is supposed to be a positive influence on
his associates. A role model, a mentor, a guiding light - who would
lead with confidence and drive the performance of his team, is what
is required. Such programs focus on providing guidelines that would
help the managers navigate through the tricky world of corporate
leadership. Their roles and responsibilities are highlighted in these
programs. Ideally, such programs should include the following:
-
Development of coaching or mentoring abilities
-
Accountability for team outcomes - both good and bad
-
Effective communication skills
-
Ability to collaborate and cooperate
-
Stress management
In
order to build a friendly, easy-going relationship with his team, the
manager can make good use of team building activities. Some of the
top team building activities, which may
be indoor-based or outdoor-based, should be encouraged by managers to
establish a healthy bonding. This can create an atmosphere of
goodwill and happiness.
